Where does Diabolic possession hail from?

Most uf us live in Omaha,Nebraska, but our guitarist Mike live in Lincon,Nebraska. It's a shithole in the armpit of America. Very little metal here, but we are doing what we can to rebuild the true-metal scene. There's too much of that crappy Nu-metal and all that other rap, funk metal crap. But, of course, that's true everywhere.

Give us a little history on the band.

Diabolic Possession formed in 1987. The original members were, Glyn Clark-guitar, Chad Lottmann-vocals, Bryan Cruz-drums, and Steve Jacobs(me) on guitar as well. We went through many lineup changes(especially drummers) and, after not being able to find a bassist, I switched over to bass. mIn 1993 we released our first official demo "Ripped to Pieces". The lineup then was Glyn Clark-guitars, Chad Lottmann-vocals, Steve Jacobs-bass,Brian Dyer-drums,and Eric Hahn-guitar. We also recorded a full length album with that lineup, but it was never released. Our drummer left for some chick, and we never finished the recording. We tried out a couple other drummers but didn't find one who was good enough, and we eventually fell apart.

What brought about you getting back together after such a long breakup?

Me and Glenn started getting together and jamming, We were going to form a new band. We were writing some new stuff(which eventually became " Order of Deception"). We went to the Morbid Angel concert becuase we knew Pete Hilario would be there. I had jammed with Pete back in the day in a band called Nasferatu. he's the only drummer in town good enough and heavy enough to do the job.We also knew we wanted Chad Lottman on vocals. Chad had a very unique voice style. He has several styles of singing that he incorporates into the songs. Everything from low growls to the screams of some possessed freak. But more importantly, is Chad's stage presence. When he gets up on stage, something happens. He changes. He becomes a monster. You can actually see the audience back away from him when he gets near them. One day Glyn said that we should put DP back together again because three of us were original members anyway. The more iI thought about it, the better it sounded. We put ads out for a second guitarist ,and eventually found Mike Ferguson from Lincon, Nebraska. Mike's an incredible guitar player. I think he actually learned our old stuff faster than we did.

How long have you been back together for?

It's been about a year. Our first show was in April.

Is there a new disk in the works?

We're in the studio right now recording a demo. It's just a few songs. Since the only thing we have out right now is "Ripped to Pieces" from 1993, we want to get something out there to promote our new material. It's just to hold people over until we can record an album, which we'll be doing in the near future. The song's we're recording right now are "Fall of the Angels",and "Order of Deception", which are both brand new songs, plus Sarcophagus", which was from our old unreleased album "Return to the Grave". It'll be completed very soon.

Describe Diabolic Possession for the readers.

Well...we're ugly. Especially Chad. But we're hung like bears. It's like we're Tom Jones or something. Oh...you mean the music! We call it dark metal. It's kinda somewhere between death and black metal. Our old stuff was strictly death, but it seems we've(unconsciously) gotten fasterwith a little bit of the black metal elements. We're definately not following any trends. It seems antone can throw on some corpse paint and call themselves black metal. We try to stay away from that sort of thing. We just play an extreme style of music.

So how's the scene in your area?

Pretty weak. There's only a couple of bands playing heavy music. There's tons of nu-metal and that kind of stuff. Wer're starting to get a pretty big following though. In the short time we've been back together, we've already become the biggest drawing metal band in Omaha. I think most of the kids are too young to know about true metal, but we're showing them the light. All they know is what has been force fed to them. We're showing them that there's another way to do things. It took Jesus and twelve deciples to spread Christianity... there's only five of us in Diabolic Possession, but we don't need to be that big.

Are you going full speed ahead with the band or just piecing things together slowly?

Kind of both. Things are happening so fast that we're often too busy to get some of the things done. we've still got a few songs from the "Return to the Grave" album to re-leran. It's definately all-out. Shows, recording, website writing, merchandise, more shows, promotions, learning old songs. All these things are keeping us very busy.

What can we expect from any new material?

Our new material is much more advanced. I was kinda worried at first if the new material was going to be heavy enough. We'd been broke up for ten years. I was wondering if we still knew how to write good, let alone play it. But it turns out it's more brutal than ever. We're very excited about the new stuff, and we've heard nothing but good things from the fans.

You still circulating the old disk around?

We've been sold out of the "Ripped to Pieces" cd for years, although you may still be able to order it from Relapse. We've got cassettes of it still. You can order them on our website www.diabolicpossession.com . We're planning on re-releasing the cd soon.

How have the crowds been responding to your shows?

Very favorable. Like i said earlier, the crowds keep getting bigger. Lots of headbanging long hairs in the front row. Sometimes I'll be walking around in the crowd and overhear someone saying" I'm just here to see Diabolic". Even though I support local music, it still makes you fell good to hear that.

Any shows lined up?

Aug 30th in St Louis,MO

Sept 12&13 in Cheyenne,WY and Denver,CO

I think that's it for right now. We really need to take some time off from doing so many shows so we can get some other stuff done.

Anything else you would like to add?

Thanks John for the interview. Everyone check out our website www.diabolicpossession.com .Anyone who can book us shows in that area please get ahold uf us. Thanks for the support everyone! Take care! Steve.
